The Kid from Plano

Did I ever tell you about how a kid from Plano, Texas, and I battled back and forth in 1989? We first “met” November 5th at the Bud Light U. S. Triathlon Series National Championship at Hilton Head, South Carolina. The kid took me on the bike leg 56:21 to 1:08:55, but I got him on the run 40:25 to 40:26. I ended up beating the kid this race and you might guess that I beat him by 13 minutes or so in the swim. He actually beat me by 18:15 to 29:13 and, I must confess, my victory was due to his disqualification. His DQ was probably for drafting, a skill he polished as he has matured. I like to remember this victory over an 18 year-old Lance Armstrong as a 1-second triumph in the final leg. If I ever actually meet Lance, I’m going to ask him if he just cruised the run knowing that he was DQ’d as I nipped him by 1 second. Let’s hear it for wave starts.

Our second “meeting” came November 18 at the National Sprint Championship at Aventura, Florida. Anxious to even the score with me and the world, the kid won the race overall in 52:39.6 beating Mike Pigg, 53:19.9, Dave Scott, 54:57.3, Cyle Sage, 59:30.9, Jack Pyhel, 1:03:13.1, me, 1:07:13.2, and Richard Gonzmart, 1:12:29.0, to name a few.

As I watch the Tour de France this year, I’ll think how glad I am that I kept those old race results.
